Gesturing the Void...
One of my teacher’s, Brenda Louie, spoke of Chinese master’s works, saying they perfected a single stroke and those strokes stood alone as complete paintings. They knew the exact placement, when to set the brush down and when to lift it with the perfect amount of pressure. These strokes were genuine, sure and true but took many years to perfect. She went on to say that if we stopped after a single stroke it would be arrogant! After painting for many years, I have learned to recognize when a single stroke conveys something profound, and I have developed the confidence to stop. Not a Chinese master, simply a lucky break.
